Would you order people to do good deeds and forget to do them yourselves even though you read the Book? Why do you not think?

Tafsir
Do you order the people to righteousness and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Will you not reason? This verse is one of the Qurans sharpest criticisms of the gap between preaching and practice. identifies this as a universal spiritual failure, not limited to any particular group: the person who calls others to good while neglecting their own soul has not understood that the knowledge they transmit is, first and foremost, addressed to themselves. The phrase while you recite the Scripture intensifies the critique: the one who reads the divine word and still fails to apply it to themselves has a deeper problem than ignorance — they have allowed the sacred text to pass through them without penetrating.
