When We told the angels to prostrate before Adam, they all obeyed except Iblis (Satan) who abstained out of pride and so he became one of those who deny the truth.

Tafsir
The command to the angels to prostrate before Adam, and Ibliss refusal, is one of the pivotal moments in Quranic cosmology. explains that the prostration was not worship of Adam but a recognition — commanded by Allah — of the human beings divinely granted dignity as vicegerent. Ibliss refusal was not simply disobedience; it was the assertion of a false hierarchy: I am better than him, You created me from fire and him from clay. This argument — that origin determines worth — is the prototype of arrogance (kibr). Iblis saw matter and origin; he was blind to the divine gift that elevated Adam. Pride, the Quran teaches, always involves a failure of vision.
