We told Adam to stay with his spouse (Eve) in the garden and enjoy the foods therein, but not to go near a certain tree lest he become one of the transgressors.

Tafsir
Allah placed Adam and his wife in Paradise and gave them a single boundary: do not approach this tree. notes that the command was not arbitrary but was a test of the human beings capacity for obedience when surrounded by boundless gifts. Paradise represents the condition of harmony with divine will — a state where every desire is fulfilled within the proper order. The single prohibition was an invitation to freely chosen devotion: to show that the human being could honor a boundary not out of compulsion but out of love and trust. The test is ultimately about whether the human heart can be satisfied with what Allah has given, or whether it will always reach beyond its proper limits.
