وَإِذَا لَقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَوْا۟ إِلَىٰ شَيَـٰطِينِهِمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا مَعَكُمْ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُسْتَهْزِءُونَ
“And when they meet those who believe, they say: We believe; and when they are alone with their Shaitans, they say: Surely we are with you, we were only mocking.”
Al-Baqarah 2:14

Tafsir
The hypocrite exists in two worlds simultaneously — presenting a face of faith to believers, and a face of mockery to their companions in disbelief. This double life is not merely dishonest; it reveals a soul that has no center, no true self. draws on this verse to explain that the unity of the self — being the same in public and private, before God and before people — is the hallmark of sincerity (ikhlas). The hypocrites constant code-switching is exhausting and ultimately self-destroying, because the self cannot sustain two incompatible identities indefinitely. The Quran invites every reader to ask: am I the same person when alone with Allah as when I am among people?
