“And when it is said to them: Believe as the people believe, they say: Shall we believe as the fools believe? Now surely they themselves are the fools, but they do not know.”

When they are told to believe as everyone else does, they say, "Should we believe as fools do?" In fact, they themselves are fools, but they do not know it.

Tafsir
The hypocritesdismissal of the sincere believers asfools' (sufaha') is one of the Qurans most pointed ironies. In the hypocrites worldview, faith is foolishness — a naive surrender of self-interest. But the Quran inverts this completely: it is the hypocrites who are the true fools, for they have traded the eternal for the ephemeral. notes that the Arabic word for fool here (safih) refers to one who lacks the wisdom to manage their true interests. The believer who submits sincerely to Allah has chosen the highest wisdom; the one who mocks that submission has shown the deepest foolishness.
