Tafsir
This verse opens the Qurans first extended discussion of hypocrisy — the condition of those who claim faith on their tongues while their hearts are closed. The hypocrite (munafiq) is distinguished not merely by lying, but by a deeper spiritual disorder: the disconnection between outward profession and inward reality. Allahs declaration that they are not believers reveals that faith is not a verbal formula but a living state of the heart that must correspond to one's words and deeds. The Imams of the Ahlul Bayt consistently warned that the disease of hypocrisy begins when a person becomes comfortable with the gap between what they say and what they truly believe.
