He taught Adam all the names. Then He introduced (some intelligent beings) to the angels, asking them to tell Him the names of these beings, if the angels were true to their claim (that they more deserved to be His deputies on earth).

Tafsir
And He taught Adam the names of all things. This is one of the most profound verses in the Quran for 's understanding of human nature. The 'names' (asma) refer not merely to labels but to the realities and essences of things — knowledge of the nature of existence itself. By being taught all the names, Adam received a comprehensive understanding of creation that the angels, despite their proximity to Allah, did not possess. This is the source of human vicegerency: the capacity for a depth of knowledge and understanding that uniquely qualifies the human being to be Allahs representative on earth. The gift of language and conceptual thought is thus a divine trust.
