“Their parable is like the parable of one who kindled a fire, but when it had illumined all around him, Allah took away their light, and left them in utter darkness-- they do not see.”

(Their case) is like that of one who kindles a fire and when it grows bright God takes away its light leaving him in darkness (wherein) he cannot see (anything).

Tafsir
The parable of the man who lights a fire — which illuminates everything around him, then is extinguished by Allah, leaving him in layers of darkness — is a perfect portrait of the hypocrites spiritual condition. Thefire' represents the outward appearance of faith: it temporarily gave the hypocrite social warmth, community, and the protection of belonging to the believers. But it was not genuine light — it was borrowed illumination with no inner source. When Allah withdraws the conditions that sustained this performance, the hypocrite is left in deeper darkness than before, because they have squandered the opportunity for real faith.
