فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مَرَضًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْذِبُونَ
“There is a disease in their hearts, so Allah added to their disease and they shall have a painful chastisement because they lied.”

Tafsir
The 'disease' (marad) in the hearts of the hypocrites is not a metaphor but a precise description of a spiritual state. Just as a physical disease weakens the bodys capacity to function, spiritual disease weakens the hearts capacity to receive and hold divine guidance. Most significantly, Allah increases their disease — meaning that the deliberate rejection of truth is not a static condition but a progressive one. Every time a person chooses falsehood over truth, the heart's receptivity diminishes further. This is the Quranic law of spiritual hardening: the heart that refuses to grow toward Allah does not stay still — it contracts.
