أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلْمَلَإِ مِنۢ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مُوسَىٰٓ إِذْ قَالُوا۟ لِنَبِىٍّ لَّهُمُ ٱبْعَثْ لَنَا مَلِكًا نُّقَـٰتِلْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ قَالَ هَلْ عَسَيْتُمْ إِن كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْقِتَالُ أَلَّا تُقَـٰتِلُوا۟ ۖ قَالُوا۟ وَمَا لَنَآ أَلَّا نُقَـٰتِلَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَقَدْ أُخْرِجْنَا مِن دِيَـٰرِنَا وَأَبْنَآئِنَا ۖ فَلَمَّا كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقِتَالُ تَوَلَّوْا۟ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّنْهُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌۢ بِٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
“Have you not considered the chiefs of the children of Israel after Musa, when they said to a prophet of theirs: Raise up for us a king, (that) we may fight in the way of Allah. He said: May it not be that you would not fight if fighting is ordained for you? They said: And what reason have we that we should not fight in the way of Allah, and we have indeed been compelled to abandon our homes and our children. But when fighting was ordained for them, they turned back, except a few of them, and Allah knows the unjust.”

کیا تم نے موسیٰ علیھ السّلامکے بعد بنی اسرائیل کی اس جماعت کونہیں دیکھا جس نے اپنے نبی سے کہا کہ ہمارے واسطے ایک بادشاہ مقرر کیجئے تاکہ ہم راسِ خدا میں جہاد کریں. نبی نے فرمایا کہ اندیشہ یہ ہے کہ تم پر جہادواجب ہوجائے توتم جہاد نہ کرو. ان لوگوں نے کہا کہ ہم کیوںکر جہاد نہ کریں گے جب کہ ہمیں ہمارے گھروں اور بال بّچوںسے الگ نکال باہر کردیا گیا ہے. اس کے بعد جب جہاد واجب کردیا گیا تو تھوڑے سے افراد کے علاوہ سب منحرف ہوگئے اور اللہ ظالمین کو خوب جانتا ہے

آیا ندیدی آن گروه بنی اسرائیل را که پس از وفات موسی از پیغمبر وقت خود تقاضا کردند که پادشاهی برای ما برانگیز تا (به سرکردگی او) در راه خدا جهاد کنیم؛ پیغمبر آنها گفت: اگر جهاد فرض شود مبادا به جنگ قیام نکرده، نافرمانی کنید! گفتند: چگونه شود که ما به جنگ نرویم در صورتی که (دشمنان ما) ما و فرزندان ما را (به ستم) از دیارمان بیرون کردند؟! پس چون (با درخواست آنها) جهاد مقرّر گردید به جز اندکی همه روی گردانیدند، و خدا از کردار ستمکاران آگاه است.

(Muhammad), remember that group of the Israelites after Moses who demanded a Prophet of their own to appoint a king for them who would lead them in the fight for the cause of God. Their Prophet then said, "What if you are ordered to fight and you disobey?" They said, "Why should we not fight for the cause of God when we and our sons have been expelled from our homes?" However, when they were ordered to fight, all refused except a few among them. God knows well the unjust.
